Wine Tasting – Number 1

I’ve been planning to do a wine tasting for a while now, and I’ve finally organized myself enough to accomplish it. I will attempt to host a wine tasting at my apartment in Poughkeepsie once a month. Each month will have a different theme, and we may even stray into Beer tastings seasonally.
I imagine things will sort themselves out as we go, but here’s the basic gist:

  • Each tasting will cost $10 per person, so I can purchase wine.
  • The tastings will be announced here, along with the theme.
  • I’ll try to put something together so we can rate each wine.

More details about the first tasting after the jump.

Intro to domestic wines

The first tasting will be a broad survey of the classic wines available from the USA. I wanted to start us off on something simple to get everyone on the same page. You don’t need to know anything about wine to attend this tasting.

We’ll talk about the mechanics of tasting wine, and some of the broad categories that wines fit into. To avoid any unintentional variations, all of the wines this month come from the same winery and, with the exception of two, the same year.

  • Robert Mondavi – Private Selection
    • Pino Grigio – 2005
    • Sauvignon Blanc – 2006
    • Chardonnay – 2005
    • Cabernet Sauvignon – 2005
    • Merlot – 2005
    • Pinot Noir – 2006

In addition, if I am sufficiently motivated, I’ll try to put together some hors d’oeuvre which pair with the wines we are tasting. This way you can get ideas for things to serve with the wines. So come prepared for some small cheeses and the such. I recommend having some real dinner beforehand, however, lest you get so drunk you can’t taste the final wines!

  • DATE: 5/14/2008
  • TIME: 7:30pm
  • ATTIRE: Formal

Comment below if you plan to attend so that I can get an idea of the number of people coming.

How much for those of us that want just to become cheese-o’s (cheese mongers?) in place of winos?

  2. Eileen Says:

I will be there with bells on :) well not really….but you know what I mean.

  3. Adam Says:

Jen and I will be attending, but only one of us will be wearing our “wine-tasting shoes”. This was totally 1/2 RSVP 1/2 riddle!

  4. Patrick Says:

Yes. I will be there…is there any sort of Dress code for this event? is Formal Attire required?

    ANSWERS:

For those of you who won’t be partaking in the wine, there is no charge. I’m still sorting out the food situation, because I wasn’t really planning any and need to get stuff to pair with the wines.

Regarding attire, yes I think we should keep this a formal occasion and suits would be fantastic. We aren’t tasting $2 bottles of hooch here, these are bottles fit for “lushes”.

Also I received word that Eric can’t make it, Marcus is “tentative”, Charu is no response, and Tara is coming.
