FYI - Mike called again today. He found his hostel (backpacker's hotel) a "luxureous room with a private bath" and managed to order food from a nearby restaurant with the help of his tour book for translation. Now he is off to by sunscreen (too late for the sunburn he got yesterday) and to do some sightseeing. Still hasn't found (or made it to) a place to access the internet.

FYI - Mike left a message on my work phone yesterday 3/3 that he had stayed at a hotel in Caracas the first night but was looking for a less expensive one. He didn't say much else but considering that it was around noon I assume he had just woken up. Where he is now is anyone's guess.

I hope you found a safe place to sleep on your first night in Caracas and connected with your bag OK. Check your Email when you can. You received some mail that may need some reply. But no rush. I just noticed that Caracas is near the coast. Is there a beach nearby?

Mike, if you took that book I got you along, I think it has all the major phrases in it that you might need in most countries... or that could have been a different book altogether in which case, sorry. The most important one in Spanish speaking countries... "?Donde esta el bano?" 'Where is the bathroom?' You can usually gesture most other basic needs, but that one is a bit difficult to act out without getting arrested. I used it in dc once or twice, too. Good luck and have fun!
